About Us

The White Cart Credit Union is a member of The Association of British Credit Unions Ltd (ABCUL), the leading trade association for credit unions in England, Scotland and Wales.

White Cart

The White Cart Credit Union is a not-for-profit co-operative dedicated to promoting saving and dealing with debt. It was originally established in 1986 and continues to provide savings and loans for anyone living, working or studying in Renfrewshire. Like all Credit Unions, we aim to provide affordable financial services for members of the local community. With no other shareholders to worry about, our only focus is our membership. We are committed to doing business in a way that contributes to the social, economic and environmental well-being of our local community.

Our Achievements

From small beginnings nearly 30 years ago, in a local church hall and with a small handful of members, we now have more than 1,500 members (adults and juniors) and we operate from our own smart office in the Neilston Road shopping area. Our members are really getting the savings habit - with a 21% increase between 2012 and 2013 alone. They're borrowing more, nearly 30% more, for Christmas, holidays, weddings and 'emergencies', but they're also good at paying back their loans. Open 6 days a week, our Thursday 'late night' opening has proved very popular. We're looking at ways we might be able to increase our opening hours on other days. To do this, though, we need more volunteers to help staff the desk!

We need your help

At present, our team has only one part-time employee - the rest of us are volunteers. We give up a little of our precious time to keep the White Cart Credit Union running as smoothly as possible. There aren't many of us, so... we're always on the lookout for more volunteers to join us. Do you have any spare time? Maybe just a few hours a week? If you think you could be of help, please pop in and see us, give us a call, or email us.

Our Objectives

We aim to:
  • Alleviate poverty and financial hardship, particularly for those experiencing unemployment and low income
  • Provide a community banking service for local people excluded from mainstream banking systems and to avoid incidence of borrowing from local money lenders
  • To help the local economy by allowing community members to save and borrow at low interest rates
  • To adhere to and maintain principles of mutuality, open and voluntary membership and a democratic structure.

How we are run and regulated

On a day-to-day basis, we are managed by an elected Board of Directors which has two sub-committees: a Credit Committee and a Supervisory Committee. The current membership of these can be seen in the table on the right. As well as being a member of the Association of British Credit Unions Ltd (ABCUL), the financial management of the credit union is regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (formerly the Financial Services Authority) and the Prudential Regulation Authority of the Bank of England. Members of the credit union are protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme in the event of catastrophic financial collapse of the credit union.
