About Us

The White Cart Credit Union is a member of The Association of British Credit Unions Ltd (ABCUL), the leading trade association for credit unions in England, Scotland and Wales.

White Cart

The White Cart Credit Union is a not-for-profit co-operative dedicated to promoting saving and dealing with debt. It was originally established in 1986 and continues to provide savings and loans for anyone living, working or studying in Renfrewshire. Like all Credit Unions, we aim to provide affordable financial services for members of the local community. With no other shareholders to worry about, our only focus is our membership. We are committed to doing business in a way that contributes to the social, economic and environmental well-being of our local community.

Our Achievements

The mission of the Credit Union is to promote the financial well-being of its members.

From small beginnings in 1986, working from a local church hall and with a small handful of members, we now have more than 2,500 members (adults and juniors), and we operate from our own office in the Neilston Road shopping area.

We are proud of our association with many primary schools in the area, encouraging saving from an early age. We also provide banking services to a number of community groups.

The staff and volunteers feel that we are very much part of the local community and offer that personal touch. We treat each member as an individual and tailor our services to your precise needs. We don't try and sell you anything.

We need your help

At present, our team has only one part-time employee - the rest of us are volunteers. We give up a little of our precious time to keep the White Cart Credit Union running as smoothly as possible. There aren't many of us, so... we're always on the lookout for more volunteers to join us. Do you have any spare time? Maybe just a few hours a week? If you think you could be of help, please pop in and see us, give us a call, or email us.

Our Objectives

We aim to:

  • Alleviate poverty and financial hardship, particularly for those experiencing unemployment and low income
  • Provide a community banking service for local people excluded from mainstream banking systems and avoid the incidence of borrowing from local money lenders
  • To help the local economy by allowing community members to save and borrow at low-interest rates
  • To adhere to and maintain principles of mutuality, open and voluntary membership and a democratic structure.

How we are run and regulated

On a day-to-day basis, we are managed by an elected Board of Directors which has two sub-committees: a Credit Committee and a Supervisory Committee. As well as being a member of the Association of British Credit Unions Ltd (ABCUL), the financial management of the credit union is regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (formerly the Financial Services Authority) and the Prudential Regulation Authority of the Bank of England. Members of the credit union are protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme in the event of the catastrophic financial collapse of the credit union.
